Blood & Bourbon
Krewes and Coteries
“Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.”
William Shakespeare, The Tempest
Jocelyn: “I guess you should join a krewe.”
Caroline: “To what end?”
Jocelyn: “Well, protection, duh. Having other licks look out for you and watch your back.”
Caroline: Caroline reflects on her fight with the gang of vampires. Three versus one in an alley. Her blood on a knife, her arms pinned.
“I can see how that would help.”
Jocelyn Baker and Caroline Malveaux-Devillers
“I have kept the company of many Kindred in this domain. In younger nights, I whiled away the hours discussing transient philosophies with the Order of the Dragon and I sparred with the platonisms of the Invictus. My own faith rang hollowly in the ears of my Sanctified companions, while the Circle of the Crone matched wits but not theologies with me. Even those who swore by no covenant or creed called us allies.”
“Yet still, despite our differences, we kept each other’s confidences and counsel. We did this because, those differences aside, we were beholden to each other. We watched each other’s backs, because who else would?”
Handsome Jack, Confessions to a Prince
Kindred are Embraced into clans and pledge allegiance to covenants, but coteries are the vampires with whom they associate on a night-to-night basis. The importance of these groups should not be underestimated. Many coteries, such as the inner circles of the prince and his rivals, the Cabildo (primogen council), the Guard de Ville, and the Krewe of Janus have played pivotal roles in New Orleans’ political landscape. The majority of neonates, too, band into krewes (the local nickname for all-neonate coteries) for mutual protection and companionship. A well-disciplined krewe can bring down elders that might crush any neonate alone.
A vampire’s coterie-mates are the lead chanters in their Requiem.
Coteries
“Coterie” is a term used to denote a group of vampires (three or more) who have banded together for a common purpose. Typically, they choose to do so on their own, under the belief that safety lies in numbers. Just as often, it’s out of simple desire for companionship in a grim and merciless existence. Occasionally, princes, regents, and other elders assign neonates together as a “coterie” for a specific task.
Conventional wisdom holds that elders and ancillae do not belong to coteries. This isn’t completely true. They are typically less dependent upon their coteries and less trustful of their coterie-mates than neonates, but they still gather into cliques like anyone else. Bonds of friendship simply tend to be weaker—one isn’t likely to find several ancillae sharing a haven together like many neonates do. Older coteries also tend to spend less time with one another, and they usually do so for a more specific purpose than “companionship and survival.”
The following coteries are some of the city’s better-known ones. Doubtless, there are others that have kept their existences hidden.
The Anointed
• Perceived Goals: Seeing to the spiritual well-being of the city’s Sanctified and supporting Prince Vidal’s rule
• Meeting Place: Perdido House and assorted churches as the need dictates
• Prerequisites to Join: Ordination by a Sanctified bishop
• Required Backgrounds: Status (Bourbon Sanctified or Hardline Sanctified) ••+
The Anointed are the Lancea et Sanctum’s ordained priests and the spiritual heart of the covenant. Although Vidal is the city’s prince and the leader of its Sanctified, he is still a lay member of the covenant and cannot perform the same functions as its actual clergy (most notably, communion and confession, two of the church’s most important rituals). As such, while Vidal oversees the temporal affairs of the Lancea et Sanctum, it is the Anointed who attend to its members’ souls. This role is not inconsequential. Every good Sanctified takes weekly confession with a priest and relies upon them for spiritual guidance and advice. Many non-Sanctified (primarily Invictus and Tremere, some Anarchs, and virtually no Crones) also do the same: regular confession results in lesser punishments for infractions, and at the discretion of a priest. Vidal also requires regents to have a priest present for a variety of functions, including formal grants of domain to their vassals.
It should be noted that many of Savoy’s people are far laxer when it comes to making confession of their sins. There are currently no priests who support the French Quarter lord. There were several before Katrina, including the city’s then-bishop, Clarice Barabet, and they lent substantial spiritual legitimacy to Savoy’s cause. He has made repeated overtures to the coterie in the years since, but for now they appear firmly aligned with Vidal.
The coterie suffered a black year during 2016, when no less than three priests—Bishop Malveaux, Mother Doriocourt, and Father Donovan (who was ordained the same year) met final death. Father d’Gerasene left New Orleans earlier that same year. Mother Benson was ordained soon thereafter. The coterie is looking to rebuild its ranks.

Antoine Savoy’s Inner Circle
• Perceived Goals: Bringing Antoine Savoy to power and establishing positions of authority for themselves in the new regime
• Meeting Place: The Evergreen Plantation
• Prerequisites to Join: Significant usefulness to Antoine Savoy
• Required Backgrounds: Status ••+ in one’s clan, covenant, or the Camarilla
• Members: Antoine Savoy, Natasha Preston, Peter Lebeaux, Rosa Bale, Veronica Alsten-Pirrie
Antoine Savoy’s inner circle are his most trusted partisans, personal lieutenants, and the officers of his court. In comparison to Vidal’s people, most of Savoy’s are young. All of them except Savoy himself are pledged to another covenant in addition to (and in one case, in place of) the Lancea et Sanctum. The French Quarter lord is happy to make friends everywhere and does not mandate his lieutenants be loyal to the Sanctified alone like Vidal does.
Current Members
Antoine Savoy
Lineage: 7th gen. childe of Maria Pascual
Embrace: 17th century
Status: Bourbon Sanctified •••••, Camarilla •••••
Coterie: Antoine Savoy’s inner circle
Savoy, of course, is the leader of the coterie, and meets regularly with his lieutenants to coordinate their activities and offer whatever information and assistance they may need. Unlike Vidal, Savoy is very much a hands-on ruler and is keen to know the details of what his people are up to. Savoy also tends to gives them a great deal of autonomy in their duties and regularly solicits (and implements) their opinions and advice. He seems to believe they can do their jobs just fine on their own, and appears more interested in staying informed than micromanaging.
Natasha Preston
Lineage: 8th gen. childe of Constance Leyburne
Embrace: 1967
Status: Bourbon Sanctified •••, Camarilla ••, Invictus ••, Malkavian •••
Coterie: Antoine Savoy’s inner circle
Preston serves as the French Quarter lord’s steward and administrative right hand, overseeing many of the night-to-night details of his reign. Whenever someone meets with Savoy, rare indeed is the night that Preston isn’t there too, silently taking notes and pulling up facts on her tablet. If Savoy becomes prince, Preston is widely thought to be his first choice for seneschal.
Peter Lebeaux
Lineage: 9th gen. childe of Erwin Bornemann
Embrace: 2003
Status: Bourbon Sanctified •••, Camarilla ••, Tremere •
Coterie: Antoine Savoy’s inner circle
Lebeaux serves as the French Quarter’s warden (essentially a localized sheriff) and is likewise thought to be Savoy’s first choice for sheriff of the larger city. While Lebeaux lacks Donovan’s fearsome reputation and supernatural puissance, he has established himself as a diligent and cunning investigator with firm moral convictions (for a vampire). His presence at Savoy’s side, and status as the Tremere primogen’s grandchilde, also makes clear that the warlocks are far from wholly united in their support of Vidal. His police connections are of substantial use to his patron too.
Rosa Bale
Lineage: Unknown
Embrace: 1920
Status: Bourbon Sanctified •••, Camarilla ••, Circle of the Crone •••, Ventrue 0
Coterie: Antoine Savoy’s inner circle
The Vodouisant Rosa Bale is Savoy’s mystic advisor and the only mambo of significant power to side with him over the Baron. Whenever the French Quarter lord conducts a Vodouisant rite or simply wants to look theologically open-minded, Bale is there. Bale is on unfriendly terms with many Kindred, Baron, the Giovannini, and the Nosferatu, but her position at Savoy’s side has (so far) kept any of these groups from openly moving against her.
Veronica Alsten-Pirrie
Lineage: 8th gen. childe of Accou Poincaré
Embrace: 1924
Status: Anarch ••••, Camarilla •••, Toreador •••
Coteries: Antoine Savoy’s inner circle, the harpies •••
The harpy Veronica Alsten-Pirrie is the newest member of this group but has quickly established herself as one of its most useful members. She came over in 2015 following the scandal over John Harley Matheson’s feeding upon neonates with Vidal’s apparent blessing. Veronica also brought over roughly half of the city’s more discontented Anarchs, who found Matheson the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.
Former Members
This coterie owes much of its youth to Hurricane Katrina. Prior to the storm, it consisted of Clarice Barabet, Jared Buckner, and Annie Pope. Clarice was the city’s Sanctified bishop and lent a great deal of spiritual authority to Savoy’s side. Buckner was a former servire under Roger Halliburton, as well as the Gangrel archon’s childe, and served as the French Quarter’s warden before Peter Lebeaux. Annie Pope was a former leader among the Anarchs. She didn’t meet Veronica’s success in splitting the covenant, but helped a few disaffected members of the Movement find their way to the French Quarter. She was also considered the deadliest fighter among Savoy’s bloc and he’s ultimately never managed to replace her. Rosa Bale occupied her present position and was actually the coterie’s youngest member. She was its sole member besides Savoy himself to survive Katrina.
Finally, the Ventrue Reynaldo Gui Gui, a consummate host, was Savoy’s informal master of Elysium and organized the regular parties for which Savoy’s court remains so reputed. It was anyone’s guess whether he was telling the truth that his sire was Al Capone himself, but Gui was just as useful to Savoy for his influence over Mafia-related organized crime. Gui came to New Orleans after Katrina and disappeared around the time of the 2016 Battle of the Arts District. He’s presumed to have met final death in that conflict.
Augusto Vidal’s Inner Circle
• Perceived Goals: Maintaining and perpetuating the power of the city’s prince
• Meeting Place: Perdido House
• Prerequisites to Join: Flawless service to the Lancea et Sanctum or direct blood relation to Augusto Vidal
• Required Backgrounds: Augusto Vidal as an Ally, Mentor, or Paramour; Status (Hardline Sanctified) •••+ or direct blood relation to the prince
• Members: Augusto Vidal, Caroline Malveaux-Devillers, Philip Maldonato
Current Members
Augusto Vidal
Lineage: 6th gen. childe of Urcalida
Embrace: 13th century
Status: Camarilla ••••• •, Hardline Sanctified •••••, Ventrue ••••• •
Coteries: Augusto Vidal’s inner circle, the Gerousia
Vidal, compared to the ever-gregarious Antoine Savoy, takes few Kindred into his closest confidences. The prince has grown notoriously reclusive since Hurricane Katrina and the members of this coterie are the sole individuals who actually see him face-to-face on a regular basis. Virtually all other Kindred must secure an audience through Maldonato, who declines most such requests. Until recently, this group was barely large enough to be called a coterie, and the balance of power among its members was thought to be highly skewed.
Philip Maldonato
Lineage: 7th gen. childe of Shu’ayb al-Mohager
Embrace: Many centuries ago
Status: Camarilla •••••, Hardline Sanctified ••••, Lasombra ••••
Coteries: Augusto Vidal’s inner circle, Cabildo ••••
Maldonato was Vidal’s lover, confidante, and brother-in-arms for centuries before New Orleans was founded. He enjoys the prince’s trust (and possibly affection) to a degree that no other vampire will likely ever obtain. Maldonato is presumed to be the sole individual in the city with unrestricted access to the hoary Ventrue, and perhaps also knowledge of his innermost thoughts.
Caroline Malveaux-Devillers
Lineage: 7th gen. childe of Augusto Vidal
Embrace: 2015
Status: Camarilla •, Hardline Sanctified •, Ventrue •
Coteries: Augusto Vidal’s inner circle, Guard de Ville ••, Low Table •••, Leviathan Committee •••, Red Right Hand •••
The newest member of the coterie, Caroline Malveaux-Devillers, is Vidal’s sole childe. Until 2016, her relation to the prince remained secret to all but a handful of Kindred. There was some speculation as to what role she would play in this group, and how the circumstances of her introduction would affect the social dynamics between its then-members. The answer, as it turned out, was violently. Donovan, the city’s former sheriff and one of Vidal’s most trusted servants, attempted to slay Caroline to cement his status as the prince’s heir apparent. She and other Hardliner loyalists destroyed him during the 2016 Battle of Mt. Carmel.
Former Members
Donovan
Lineage: 8th gen. childe of Antoine Savoy
Embrace: Late 19th century
Final Death: 2016 (~120 years undead)
Status: Camarilla ••••, Hardline Sanctified •••, Toreador ••
Coteries: Augusto Vidal’s inner circle, Guard de Ville ••••, the princely contenders
Donovan, the next-most senior member of the coterie after Maldonato, positioned himself as Vidal’s clear third-in-command for some decades. He cemented that status after Bishop Barabet’s final death during Hurricane Katrina and was granted increasingly independent leeway in his duties ever since. Most Kindred found it hard to believe that Vidal granted his sheriff total carte blanche; Donovan surely still conferred with the prince on how to enforce the archdiocese’s laws. The sheriff proved as tight-lipped as ever regarding the degree to which he remained in contact with Vidal, but most Kindred considered it safe to place him among this coterie. That proved all-too ironic when he was exposed as a traitor for attempting to slay the prince’s childe Caroline Malveaux-Devillers. He met final death during the 2016 Battle of Mt. Carmel.
